My Story

Biarritz is located in southern France and is a part of the French Basque Country. It is a seaside tourist destination.

I first went to Biarritz in 2023 to visit family. I love to travel but when I can travel to beautiful cities and see family, it’s a win-win.

I recently took my mom there and we met up with my husband’s family. It was a great day. For us, it was a day-trip from San Sebastian, Spain. We drove this year, but last year, I took the train. The town is easily reachable by train if you don’t have a car.

I always use Omio to find train or bus tickets.

A Brief History of Biarritz

Biarritz first gained prominence in the 19th century when Empress Eugénie, the wife of Napoleon III, fell in love with its stunning coastline and decided to build a summer palace here, which is now the Hôtel du Palais. Rooms go from something like $1,000 a night now ! This is where my husband’s grandfather used to work as a chauffer.

Beaches

Biarritz and its famous sand beaches

Perhaps the most famous aspect of Biarritz is its beaches. The town is often called the surfing capital of Europe, with consistent waves and a lively surf culture that dates back to the 1950s when American surfers discovered its potential. The Grande Plage, or “Big Beach,” is the main hub for beachgoers, where you can find a mix of sunbathers, families, and surfers.

For those looking to catch some waves, Côte des Basques is the go-to spot. This iconic beach is known for its dramatic cliffs, golden sand, and world-class surfing conditions. It’s also a favorite among longboarders and beginners alike. As the tide comes in, the beach disappears under the waves, adding to its unique charm.

For a more tranquil experience, Plage du Port Vieux, a small cove nestled between rocky outcrops, offers calm waters and a relaxing atmosphere, ideal for families and swimmers.

Lighthouse

The lighthouse at the Pointe St. Martin

This lighthouse was built in 1834. You have great views of the lighthouse from the promenade around the beaches in Biarritz. If you’re up for it, you can also climb the 248 steps to the top of the lighthouse. You might have to wait in line because access is limited to a couple people at a time.

Rock of the Virgin

The Rock of the Blessed Virgin (Rocher de la Vierge) in Biarritz, France.

The Rock of the Virgin is connected to the mainland by an iron bridge that was designed by Gustav Eiffel in 1887. The statue of the Virgin Mary was installed by whalers who claimed to have been saved from being shipwrecked by the appearance of a supernatural light shining from the rock’s summit.

My mom knows Biarritz because she watches Jeopardy every night and this was one of the final questions. So this summer, 2024, we took her there !
