Siena, or Sienne, is in the are of Tuscany, Italy.
I highly recommend visiting this cute, small, charming town. It is definitely a do-able day trip from Florence !
Once you arrive at the main bus/train station, you can take a bus to near the city center. The city center is closed to traffic, so the bus takes you close, then you have to walk. And just a warning, Siena is a hilly town, so be prepared ! Wear your walking shoes !
I stopped in Siena on a day trip before heading to Rome. Even though I only spent several hours there, I feel like I covered the city must-sees.
The must-sees are :
1. The Torre del Mangia
You can climb to the top of this tower for a spectacular view of the city. There are over 400 steps to the top, so it’s not for the faint of heart.
Or for this spectacular view (pictured) you can enter a small space to the right of the tower.
2. The Duomo, or cathedral of Siena
The duomo is made out of black and white marble giving it a unique striped appearance.
Because of my limited time in the city, I did not enter the cathedral, but if you have time, you definitely should ! The interior looks spectacular.
3. Piazza del Campo
Where you will find the Torre del Mangia.
The piazza has a unique seashell shape. Here twice a year inn July and August, you can find the Palio di Sienne. This is a horse race that lasts less than one minute, but draws a huge crowd.
These are just a few of the things I got a chance to do. I stopped in Sienne on my way from Bologne to Rome. The city is very small and very charming. I recommend seeing this city while you’re in Italy. I’ll definitely be back !
Take a walking tour of the city, including entrance to the duomo, which you have to visit ! HERE.
