Why You Need to Travel to Burgos, Spain, the Heart of Castille

Burgos, Spain, Europe, travel, travel Europe, travel Spain, Spain travel, Europe travel

Nestled in the heart of the Castile region in northern Spain, Burgos is a city rich in history, culture, and architectural splendor. From its majestic Gothic cathedral to its charming medieval streets, Burgos offers visitors a glimpse into the rich heritage of Spain’s past.

I went to Burgos, because it is a short drive to the archaeological site of Atapuerca. Read my blog about Atapuerca here : Uncovering the Mysteries of Atapuerca: Exploring Spain’s Prehistoric Treasure – Travel Blog (sarahallisonwonderland.com)

Burgos, Spain
View of the city

The Crown Jewel: Burgos Cathedral :

Standing proudly at the heart of the city, Burgos Cathedral is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture and one of Spain’s most iconic landmarks. Marvel at its soaring spires, intricate façades, and stunning stained glass windows as you step inside this magnificent sanctuary. Admire the ornate altarpiece, explore the chapels adorned with exquisite sculptures and artwork, and climb to the top of the cathedral for panoramic views of Burgos below.

Medieval Marvels: Exploring the Old Town :

Lose yourself in the labyrinthine streets of Burgos’s historic Old Town, where every corner reveals a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered. Wander past medieval mansions, picturesque plazas, and ancient city walls as you soak up the atmosphere of centuries past.

Don’t miss landmarks like the Arch of Santa María, the Plaza Mayor, and the medieval bridge over the Arlanzón River, each offering a glimpse into Burgos’s storied past.

Culinary Delights: Gastronomic Adventures:

No visit to Burgos would be complete without indulging in its renowned culinary scene. Sample local specialties such as morcilla (blood sausage), lechazo (suckling lamb), and queso de Burgos (Burgos cheese) at traditional taverns and restaurants throughout the city. Wash it all down with a glass of Ribera del Duero wine, produced in the nearby vineyards of the Duero Valley, for a truly unforgettable gastronomic experience.

Cultural Treasures : Museums and More

Immerse yourself in Burgos’s vibrant cultural scene with a visit to its world-class museums and cultural institutions. Explore the Museum of Human Evolution, housed in a modern building designed by Juan Navarro Baldeweg, and learn about the origins of humanity through exhibits and archaeological artifacts.

I suggest going to the museum before going to the archaeological site of Atapuerca. Discover the works of local artists at the Museum of Burgos, housed in a former Renaissance palace, and explore the city’s rich artistic heritage.

If you go during the summer months, it can be hot ! I was there during a heatwave and so going to an air conditioned museum was a great idea to get out of the heat.
