Travel Europe’s Capital Cities in these ten countries

LeninWall

Travel Europe’s capital cities. All of these capital cities have something different to offer. When I was planning my first Euro-trip, I wanted to visit as many countries and capitals the I could. I was younger and living off a couple of hours of sleep at night worked for me. Now, not so much. I tend to pick one or two places and stay there, not jump on a 5am flight after two hours of sleep to get to the next city.

Usually, it is cheapest to fly into a capital of a country. So my advice is to fly roundtrip into and out of a capital city and choose one or two nearby cities to explore.

Here is a list of capitals that I explored on two Euro-trips.

Travel Europe’s capital city of greece, Athens

Me on the Acropolis in Athens, Greece

Greece is a beautiful country. I recommend going to Athens once in your life. That’s all you need. There is so much history there, go see the Acropolis, go to an archaeology museum, and then leave the city. Some people love cities, but I am not one of those people. I prefer a more quiet visit to a country without crowds of tourists.

Take a walking tour of the Acropolis here.

You can easily get to smaller, yet still beautiful towns from Athens. Delphi is about an hour north in the mountains of Greece. Naufplio is another beautiful place to go in Greece.

Take a day trip from Athens to Delphi here.

When I went to Greece, Athens was our home base, so while I spent a good amount of time in Athens, I also got to travel the country.

Travel to Europe’s capital city of italy, Rome

Rome is a great city with lots to see and do.

First, it’s Italy, so of course, eat ! Pasta, pizza, gelato.

Take a food tour here. Or a small group tour with pizza and gelato here.

Next, there is so much history including the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, the Roman forum, the Spanish steps, the Pantheon (not to be confused with the Parthenon in Greece), the Vatican.

Skip the line at the Pantheon here.

See the Vatican and Sistine Chapel here.

Travel Europe’s capital city Dublin, Ireland

Me having a Guinness in Dublin

If you can’t tell by my extremely pale skin that is covered in freckles, I come from Ireland. A great way to explore any new city is a Hop-on Hop-off bus tour. I got to see a lot of Dublin this way in the short time I was here.

Dublin is not the Ireland I pictured in my head, so for the second day we were here, we booked a tour of the lakes. This was the lush, green Ireland I was expecting.

Take a tour outside of the city here.

Let’s not forget our Irish heritage and do a Jameson tour here and the Guinness storehouse here.

Travel Europe’s capital city Amsterdam, Netherlands

A coffeeshop in Amsterdam

When I went to Amsterdam, I was young. Forget about history, I went for the coffeeshops, for those that don’t know, these are the places that sell marijuana. For me, as a US citizen, this was a crazy concept. Stores that legally sell marijuana.

Don’t do like me and experience the wonderful culture here. Take a tour of the Van Gogh museum here. Or take a WWII and Anne Frank walking tour here.

Travel Europe’s capital city Copenhagen, Denmark

Canal in Copenhagen

We didn’t have much time to do much research on the places we were going. I went during the time of internet cafés where we had to pay to use the internet, crazy concept, right ? Phones were not yet connected to the rest of the world. We had to do things like use a map to get directions to where we were going.

So before going, the two things I knew about Copenhagen were this canal and the Little Mermaid statue, which was being restored when I was there and was not on display.

Take a hop-on hop-off tour here. Or a self-guided city tour here.

Berlin, Germany

On our way to the Berlin Wall

I think we only spent the night in Berlin. When I went, the World Cup (soccer) was happening and there were giant television screens playing the games in one of the parks we went to.

We went to see the remains of the Berlin Wall, which was torn down in 1989, I remember because it is the year of me (my birth year).

Take a hop-on hop-off tour of the city here.

Travel Europe’s capital city Zurich, switzerland

Zurich, Switzerland, Europe, capitals, travel, travel Europe's capital cities
Me in a Swiss lake in Zurich

Ok ok, this is not the capital of Switzerland, but I thought it was. Bern is actually the capital.

I most wanted to swim in a Swiss lake, it was cold !

And I wanted to try Swiss chocolate. Lindt is a popular brand from here that is also sold in the US. We found a small shop of Spüngli chocolate, and it was delicious !

Discover the top attractions of the city here. Go sightseeing and take a lake cruise here.

Vienna, Austria

Me at the Schonbrunn castle in Vienna, Austria

Travel to Europe’s capital city of Vienna. I love Vienna ! I have since been back multiple times. There is so much to do and see here. The last time I went, in 2019, I went to the Natural History museum and saw the Venus of Willendorf, a four inch statue that dates somewhere between 33,000 and 20,000 years ago !

Visit Schonbrunn castle (pictured) here.

Visit the beautiful cathedral of Saint Stephen here.

Travel Europe’s capital city Prague, Czech Republique

Me in Prague

Travel to Europe’s capital city Prague !

Prague is a beautiful city and I hope to go back soon. I spent a whole week here, which was a lot considering I only spent a day or two in each city. It was in Prague that I finally got my luggage after being in Europe for 9 days without it ! This situation made me realize I need to pack more essential items in my carry-on luggage.

Take an evening sightseeing cruise here.

So, travel Europe’s capital cities, it’s honestly how I chose to travel and how I got to see so many countries.
