Map of Croatia.

Split, Croatia is an amazing city to visit. And it is easily reachable from Dubrovnik. I took a ferry from Dubrovnik to Split. This is a great option if you want to see the Croatian coast without having to pay for a private boat ride.

Coming from Maryland in the USA, I love being on the water. Taking the ferry seemed very logical to me. You can find your ferry tickets using Omio here.

You can read more about Dubrovnik, Croatia in my blog here.

History of Split, Croatia

Split, Croatia, as you can see from the map, is almost halfway down the coast of Croatia. It is the third largest city in Croatia.

It was originally a Greek colony and then Roman, and you can still find the temple of the Roman emperor Diocletian here.

Things to do in Split, Croatia

Diocletian’s Palace

Diocletian’s Palace in Split, Croatia

This palace was built in the 3rd century AD for the Roman emperor Diocletian. The exterior is open to the public. When I was traveling Split, Croatia, there was a wedding celebration here with lots of singing and dancing and even sparklers. It seems like the locals really embrace the history of Split, Croatia.

Day Trip to Krka National Park

Krka national park Croatia

The sole reason I chose Krka National Park over Plitvice Lakes was because you could swim in the water in Krka National Park. You cannot get in the water at Plitvice Lakes. This might be less important when you travel to Split, Croatia in October.

But an important point to consider is the distance you are willing to travel. Krka National Park is closer to Split, Croatia than Plitvice Lakes. Plitvice Lakes is almost 3 hours from Split while Krka National Park is about an hour away from Split, Croatia. If you are staying a while in Split, this extra distance may be nothing and you get to see more of the country. I was in Split, Croatia for only three nights, so the shorter distance to Krka National Park was worth it for me.

I took a bus tour from Split, Croatia to Krka National Park. I did this tour here that also included a wine tasting. Croatian wine is delicious, I even bought a bottle to take with me to Paris !
