Travel to Rome, Italy : The Best 3 Day Itinerary

Rome, Italy, Europe, Colosseum

If it’s your first time visiting Rome, you might be overwhelmed with what to see and do. So, I have created this three day itinerary to help you plan your trip !

I also like to wander around new cities, so if you like that too, forget the itinerary and wander ! I usually go into churches, they’re always quiet, and if you’re visiting in the summer, they are cool places to take a load off ! If you read my other posts, you’ll see I have Multiple Sclerosis, so this is perfect for me !

Day 1 in rome: Discovering Ancient Treasures

Start your adventure in Rome by immersing yourself in the rich history of the ancient world.

Begin your day with a visit to the iconic Colosseum, an awe-inspiring symbol of Rome’s grandeur and architectural prowess. Explore the ancient amphitheater’s labyrinthine of corridors and imagine the roar of the crowd as gladiators once battled in the arena.

The Colosseum

Next, wander through the ruins of the Roman Forum, once the political and commercial center of ancient Rome, where you can marvel at the majestic columns of the Temple of Saturn and the imposing Arch of Titus.

Find your priority ticket to the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill here.

If you want a less crowded forum, I suggest the Forum of Trajan. This is almost directly across the street from the Roman Forum.

Conclude your day with a visit to the Palatine Hill, where you can stroll amidst the ruins of the palaces of Rome’s emperors and enjoy panoramic views of the city below.

While you’ll be exhausted from all the walking from exploring these sites, you’ll be happy to known that they’re all relatively close to one another.

I stayed in a hostel very close to the Colosseum, and these places are all easily walkable from there.

Day 2 in rome: Vatican City and Renaissance Splendor

On your second day in Rome, embark on a journey through the Vatican City, the spiritual and cultural heart of Catholicism.

Begin your visit with a guided tour of the Vatican Museums, home to an extraordinary collection of art and artifacts spanning centuries of human history. Marvel at masterpieces by Michelangelo, Raphael, and Leonardo da Vinci as you make your way to the Sistine Chapel, where you can gaze in wonder at Michelangelo’s breath-taking ceiling frescoes.

Find your entrance ticket here.

Afterward, visit St. Peter’s Basilica, the largest church in the world, and admire its magnificent dome and awe-inspiring interior.

Find your ticket (that includes the papal tombs) here.

Saint Peter’s Basilica

Not too far from Vatican City is the Castle of Saint Angelo. I was in front of this when I looked to my left and saw St. Peter’s Basilica. Even if you don’t go inside, at least go visit. You’ll also get a nice view of the Tiber River.

Day 3 in Rome: Exploring Baroque Beauty and Hidden Gems

On your final day in Rome, delve into the city’s Baroque splendor and uncover its hidden gems.

Begin your day with a visit to the majestic Trevi Fountain, where you can toss a coin into the crystal-clear waters and make a wish for good luck.

From there, wander through the charming streets of the historic center, stopping to admire the ornate facades of the Piazza Navona and the Pantheon, one of the best-preserved ancient Roman buildings in the world.

Next, venture off the beaten path to explore the vibrant neighborhoods of Monte Testaccio, this is a mountain made from amphoras !! I would love to do an archaeological dig here !

Take a food tour here.

I also highly recommend visiting the Theater of Marcello and the Portico of Ottavia. I stumbled on this while walking around the city, but I highly recommend working this into your itinerary.

As the sun sets on your Roman adventure, head to a park right next to the Colosseum, the Parco del Colle Oppio, to watch the sunset.

With its wealth of historic landmarks, artistic treasures, and vibrant culture, Rome offers an unforgettable experience that will leave you enchanted and inspired. Whether you’re exploring ancient ruins, marveling at Renaissance masterpieces, or savoring the flavors of Italian cuisine, Rome is sure to capture your heart and imagination.

Don’t forget your sunscreen ! Even in winter, the sun is strong ! I was there at the beginning of February. I, of course, forgot my sunscreen and got sunburned !
