Plitvice Lakes or Krka National Park, Which to Choose when you Travel to Croatia ?
In this blog, I talk about why I chose Krka National Park over Plitvice Lakes. Both of these parks have beautiful scenery and lots of waterfalls.
I did not follow the advice of TLC and I chased the waterfalls.
Croatia is a beautiful country to travel, you can enjoy a beach visit on the coast or you can enjoy the mountains if you go a little inland. I have been to Croatia two times.
The first time, I went to the city of Rovinj and that left me wanting to travel Croatia more.
The last time (I plan on going back because it is a wonderful European country to travel) I worked in a hostel in Fuzine, took a day trip to Opatija, and then traveled to Dubrovnik and Split. If you haven’t been, I highly recommend going.
Check out my blog on Dubrovnik here.
First, Krka National Park is closer to Split, so I was able to take a day trip to the park and then go on a wine tour. Croatian wine is underrated. I ended up buying a couple bottles to take home. They wrapped it and I could put it in my checked baggage.
For me, the deciding factor was that at Krka National Park, you can go swimming ! Yes, you heard that right. You can jump in and swim towards the waterfalls. It is absolutely magical. At Plitvice Lakes, it is forbidden to go swimming.
Krka National park has a boardwalk that you follow around the park. By following this path, you will have many fantastic views and see lots of waterfalls.
Once you’ve walked around the park, go for a swim ! You can only swim in one designated area, not wherever you want. It is a national park where preservation is important, so the area where humans can go into the water is limited. Luckily, it wasn’t so crowded when I went.
Here is the tour I took that includes transportation from Split, the boat ride to the park, and the wine tour.
I love making my own plans and figuring things out on my own, but Split was one of the last places I went (after 4 months of traveling !). I was quite tired by the time I got to Split, Croatia, so I went with the tour for convenience and relaxation. All I had to do was get on the bus, and the rest of my day was planned for me. I don’t always book tours, but when I do it’s usually because I’m tired and don’t want to think.
So if you have the choice between Plitvice Lakes and Krka National Park the next time you travel Croatia, I recommend Krka National Park !
Happy traveling !
