Multiple Sclerosis : How to cope when You Travel

Multiple Sclerosis, travel, Europe

I’m going to Greece tomorrow (April 2024) on my long overdue honeymoon (thanks to Covid, we never were able to go). So, four years later, we’re finally going to Greece ! And since our marriage, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis

One thing I have had learned to do is travel with Multiple Sclerosis. It’s a bitch of a disease. I love to travel and I never want to give that up. So, my husband and I have had to learn to adapt.

If you also have this disease, I hope these tips are able to help you continue to live your life to the fullest.

Tips for Traveling with Multiple Sclerosis

1. Always have a water bottle with you

Even for people without MS, water is life. And you don’t want to be anywhere without water. So make sure you bring a bottle with you.

2. Always have a snack with you

I’m sure you’ve all heard the word hangry (a mixture of hungry and angry). Anyone can suffer from this, but it’s even worse when you have MS. Just ask my poor husband that has to deal with it. I usually have nuts with me. They satisfy the hunger and are a healthy snack.

3. Walking aids

I am bringing walking sticks with me to Greece. These are very popular in France – where I live. I have not gotten used to needing a walking aid, my legs almost collapsing from under me when I’m very tired. And so, walking sticks are not a cane or a wheelchair, so I feel more comfortable using them.

4. Take breaks, often !

I always sit when I can. When I visit a museum, I tend to sit and look at the art on the walls rather than standing and looking. Some museums even offer small chairs that you can take with you around the museum. My husband bought me one of these small chairs that I will probably also take with me to Greece.

5. CBD

CBD or a new alternative, CBG, usually helps my body to relax. I am bringing a bottle of the oil with me to take in the mornings, afternoon, or night – whenever I feel like I need it.

While MS can be a hell of a disease, you should not let is stop you from doing what you love.
