Paris, often called the “City of Light,” is a city of remarkable architecture. The churches in Paris are great places to visit. Paris is home to some of the most stunning churches in the world. These sacred spaces are not only places of worship but also architectural gems.
As you’ll see in my other blog posts, I love churches and cathedrals. This is due to me having Multiple Sclerosis. Churches offer a free, cool (literally !) place to sit. Usually when I’m traveling, I need to sit. A lot. And so I visit a lot of churches and cathedrals.
Churches in Paris #1 : Notre-Dame de Paris
Ok, technically this is a cathedral and not a church.
The primary difference between churches and cathedrals lies in their function within the Christian structure. A church is a general place of worship for Christians, often serving a local community or parish and can vary in size and architectural significance.
In contrast, a cathedral is a specific type of church that serves as the central church and houses the bishop’s seat, or “cathedra.” This distinction often makes cathedrals more prominent in size, reflecting their importance as the administrative and spiritual center.
While all cathedrals are churches, not all churches are cathedrals.
Notre-Dame de Paris is an iconic symbol of Paris. It is a Gothic masterpiece located on the Île de la Cité. Despite the devastating fire in April 2019, its grandeur remains.
