Castles ! The Best in Périgord, France That Need to Be Added to Your Travel Bucket List Now

This region of France, known as Dordogne or Perigord, is full of prehistory. There are so many caves to visit in the region where you can see prehistoric art. One of the most famous being Lascaux. But, there are also tons of castles in this region. You always hear people talking about the Loire Valley region in France that is also full of castles. But it was in Dordogne where the famous American, Josephine Baker, had a castle.

Here are some of my favorite castles in the region.

  1. Château de Milandes
  2. Château de Commarque
  3. Château Jumilhac-le-Grand
  4. Château de Campagne
  5. Château de Bourdeilles

Read on to find out more about these castles and why they should be included on your bucket list of places to travel.

Château de Milandes

Château de Milandes

Location: Castelnaud-la-Chapelle

Historical Significance: Originally built in 1489, this Renaissance castle is renowned for being the home of the famous entertainer Josephine Baker from 1947 to 1968.

Baker was a star that left the United States to go to France in the 1920s. This was because as a black woman during the time of segregation in the United States, she couldn’t have a career in the US. She loved France so much, she even became a member of the French Resistance during World War II. The château is dedicated to her life in France, including her help in the French Resistance.

Josephine Baker now lies in the Pantheon in Paris.

Features: The castle features beautiful gardens, an exhibition dedicated to Josephine Baker, and bird of prey shows.

Château de Commarque

Château de Commarque

Location: Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil

Historical Significance: Dating back to the 12th century, this castle is a well-preserved example of medieval architecture. It served as a stronghold during the Hundred Years’ War.

This castle visit is not for the faint of heart.

I have Multiple Sclerosis and this visit was far from easy. I had my cane with me the whole time and my husband got me a small, portable chair that is light and easy to carry. I also had this with me. I also brought a spray bottle of water and a fan. And of course a water bottle with drinking water.

Even having all of this, it was hard ! It was all uphill and a lot of stairs. This visit is not for people with mobility issues (aka me, but I’m stubborn).

Features: The site includes a prehistoric cave, a medieval fortress, and offers an educational tour about the castle’s history and archaeology.

Château de Jumilhac

Château de Jumilhac

Location: Jumilhac-le-Grand

Historical Significance: This château was initially built in the 13th century and extensively remodeled in the 17th century. It played a role in the Wars of Religion in France. This is a privately owned castle that is still open for visits.

Features: Known for its unique roofline and beautiful gardens, the castle also hosts guided tours that explore its rich history and the alchemical symbols present in its design.

This castle reminds me of something out of Harry Potter.

I know this castle because the Festival of Piu de Voce is hosted there sometimes. There is an opera festival in the summer that my husband has participated in since 2019 (minus 2020 because of Covid). There are many different locations and this is one of them. What better setting to see an opera than at a castle ?

Château de Campagne

Château de Campagne

Location: Campagne

Historical Significance: This castle was built in the 12th century and burned down in the 15th century. It was modified in the 18th century, this château has been owned by several noble families throughout its history.

Features: Surrounded by a public park, the castle is a prime example of Dordogne’s architectural heritage, featuring formal gardens and a tranquil environment.

I also know this castle from the opera festival. This year, 2024, L’Elixir d’Amour was performed. If you get the chance, I highly recommend going !

Castle of Bourdeilles

Château de Bourdeilles

Location: Bourdeilles

Historical Significance: This complex includes a medieval fortress built in the 13th century and a Renaissance palace from the 16th century. It has been a site of strategic importance throughout history.

Features: Visitors can explore both the medieval and Renaissance elements of the château, with collections of period furniture and art, as well as stunning views of the Dronne River.

I also know this castle from the opera festival. This year, 2024, L’Elixir d’Amour was performed. If you get the chance, I highly recommend going !
