Santillana del Mar, Cantabria, Spain

Santillana del Mar is a beautiful, small town in the Cantabria, a northern region of Spain. It is known as the town of three lies. It is not a saint (Santo), nor is it flat (llana), nor is it by the sea (mar). The name actually comes from Santa Juliana (Santa Illana) who remains are kept in the Colegiata.

There is a huge landscape difference when driving from Burgos to Santillana del Mar. Burgos is in Castille and Leon. Santillana del Mar is in Cantabria. Driving from Castille and Leon to Cantabria, you drive through a tunnel where on one side everything is dry and brown (Castille and Leon) to the other side that is lush and green (Cantabria). It is like you have gone through a tunnel and come out the other side in a different world.
